About Gabe

My name is Gabriel David.  I was born on May 10, 1998 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. (Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo).  My mom is Nicolle and my dad is Tim.  I am your typical VERY active 8 year old boy that loves everything to do with outdoors.  I am in the 2nd grade and am really enjoying it!  I have lots of friends and am active, for the second year in Cub Scouts.

I was diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes on 10-11-99 when I was 17 months old.  The doctors believe that I got a couple of chicken pox when I was 15 months old and that it attacked my pancreas, killing all the cells that produce insulin.  I will have diabetes for the rest of my life, unless we find a cure.

I live with my mom near Lansing, Michigan.  We struggled for quite a while trying to get my sugar levels to stay "normal" by giving myself 4-8 shots of insulin a day.  My mom fought very hard to find an endocrinologist to put me on an insulin pump.  Fortunately, we found an excellent team at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Dr. Carol Foster and her team went to bat and started a clinical trial for kids under the age of 5 to see if the insulin pump would benefit them.  That study was a great success! My A1C went from almost 11 (horrible) to 8.5 and will hopefully only get better.  From there, the team conducted another trial with more kids to gather more data.  Hopefully the more data they obtain will benefit even more people!

I started using the Animas insulin pump when I was 3 and a half years old and loved it.  Last year I switched to Medtronic’s Paradigm insulin pump and love it, too!  Each one has it’s own individual set of product components, so it is important to get the one that works best for you and your lifestyle.

I have included some pictures throughout this website of myself and my family.  I hope you like them!!
